How
to Use this Book
In putting this listing together,
I’ve worked hard to create a restaurant guide that is carefully
organized to anticipate your every craving, occasion, and
budgetary consideration. Besides the detailed descriptions of
each restaurant, I offer a number of ways to access the
information you need, making this guide particularly hands-on
and user-friendly.
The book is divided into two
parts. The first part is an alphabetical listing of the over 200
Valley restaurants I selected to be in this book. Each listing
presents a detailed description of the restaurant’s cuisine,
ambiance, distinctive characteristics, and special offerings.
Vital statistics—region, address, phone number, website,
cuisine, meals served and price range, days closed, and whether
or not you need reservations—are all clearly noted so you can
find them easily, even while in the car. Finally, my signature
insider’s tips point out just what makes this place a personal
favorite.
Although I made every attempt to
provide accurate and up-to-date information about each
restaurant, please remember that things can change after a guide
has been printed. This is especially true for the restaurant
industry. When possible, call ahead or go online to confirm the
information presented. If you find any changes, please be sure
to email me (pam@cloudninepress.com) and let me know.
The second part of the book
presents a plethora of indexed lists, according to location,
cuisine, and features. In compiling these lists, I have
attempted to anticipate the ways you will want to access this
information by paying attention to the ways I choose a
restaurant. From craving a great Asian meal to wanting to cozy
up to a fireplace, from looking to accommodate a private party
of any size to finding the many romantic options, from wanting a
place close by that I can get to quickly to not minding a drive
to reach the perfect place, these indices should help keep you
satisfied.
The first set of indexes is “Location,” a
geographical listing. We’ve divided the metropolitan area into
four sections: Phoenix (including Central Phoenix, Downtown
Phoenix, and the Arcadia neighborhood), Scottsdale (including
South Scottsdale to Old Town to North Scottsdale, Cave Creek,
Carefree, Paradise Valley, and Fountain Hills),
the West Valley (including Glendale, Peoria, Litchfield Park,
Goodyear, and Surprise), and the East Valley (including Tempe,
Mesa, Chandler, Gilbert, Ahwatukee, Apache Junction, and Queen
Creek). No matter where you are in the city, turn to these
indices to pinpoint your delicious options.
The second set of indexes, “Cuisine,” is organized by type of
food. Here you will find cuisines listed, everything from
Chinese to Cuban, Hawaiian, Italian, Thai, and much more in
between! Phoenix has truly become a cosmopolitan epicurean
scene.
The final set
of indexes, “Features,” focuses on the occasions and special
qualities that I sometimes consider when choosing the perfect
place to eat. For instance, if it is a beautiful day I hate to
be inside, so here are “Dining Al Fresco” options. Planning a
lunch with my girlfriends? I’ll check the “Girls’ Day Out”
category for some terrific ideas of where to go. I’ve got out of
town guests and I want to impress them with the wonderful beauty
of the nighttime Valley. The “Fabulous Views” index offers just
the place. In my search for the best Valley eateries, I made
sure I asked myself, “Why would I want to go here?” and “What
kind of occasion is this place perfect for?” The result is the
real insider info in Dine Out
Phoenix.

Tips from a Valley
Insider
DINE OUT
Phoenix
Where to Eat
from Chic to Unique
Over 200 Valley
restaurants, from best-kept secrets to award-winning
establishments, girls' lunch spots to "seal-the-deal" power
scenes, cult classics to fine dining
For the last several years Phoenix has been one
of the fastest growing cities in America, and we have watched
it climb the list from ninth, to seventh, to fifth largest
city in the US.
That growth has brought with it many
enhancements to the city. One of the most exciting is the
developing sophistication of the Valley restaurant scene. I
see it in the opening of interesting new restaurants
throughout the city, of course, but also in the attraction of
talented chefs from around the globe either starting their
own establishments or bringing their culinary talents to
existing eateries and making their mark in the Valley.
Luckily, the growth has not squeezed out long-time Phoenix
favorites, but has brought new blush to classics such as
Durant’s, El Chorro, and Pinnacle Peak Patio. It is indeed an
exciting and delicious era in the history of Valley cuisine.
The rapid changes, however, can be a bit
baffling when there are new and inviting options popping up
all over town. I have been a Valley restaurant patron for more
than 25 years, and I try to keep tabs on what is going on
uptown, downtown, and all across the Valley. Still, too many
times I’ve found myself wondering what new place I should try,
or debating whether or not I should simply return to that old
and always delicious standard. Aside from magazines and
websites, I haven’t found a focused and reliable source that
gives me the information I need to match my mood, craving,
budget, and occasion to the perfect place. So I decided that
it was time I compile one myself.
Those of you who know my previous book,
Arizona Getaways for the Incurably Romantic, know that I
pride myself on understanding the taste of the discriminating
palate, both metaphoric and literal. Whether escaping for a
romantic weekend or organizing the perfect girls’ day out,
picking the ideal place is both an art and a pleasure. And
everyone knows that the best recommendations come from trusted
friends and colleagues who know your taste and can steer you
in the right direction.
This listing of over 200 great restaurants in
the Valley contains all my personal favorites. However, I
would be remiss if I did not mention that it was compiled with
the help of numerous trusted friends, advisors, colleagues,
and industry experts. None of us, including myself, are food
critics. Instead I’ve looked to those I know to be particular
about picking a place to eat and discriminating about what
makes a good meal great. This is not a comprehensive listing,
and no restaurant has paid or requested to be included. This
is a list of favorites from far and wide, places that after
careful research I think you will enjoy.
