About the Author

Emerson M. Colwell
Emerson M. Colwell, Jr. has been drawing for
most of his life. His cartoons are mostly about sports,
especially fishing, one of his favorite activities. His
drawing took a back set to his family life for many years.
Then one night,
in 2008, Emerson had a clear dream of his first book, "The Bay
Gull." Once he completed writing and illustrating the story,
he began working on this second book, "The Fisher Car," which
will be available in 2010. Watch for other titles also
intended for children and children at heart.
Emerson was born
and raised in Bristol, Rhode Island, which is the starting
point for the sea gull in his first children's story, "The Bay
Gull." He has lived throughout New England and currently
resides in Peoria, Arizona with his wife and three children.
His love for his
home state, sports and the environment mixed with many nights
spent reading to his own children, have resulted in a
collection of children's books which are fun and instill great
messages.
What They
are Saying...
"The Bay Gull" review by Anika Denise featured
in East Bay Newspapers
"The Bay Gull,"
by Emerson M. Colwell, Jr.
An speaking of
community celebrations, check out this new cleverly titled,
independently-published kid's book about a sea gull who finds
a bagel in Bristol and shares it on his travels. While the
illustrations are fairly rudimentary pencil drawings, the
concept and nod to familiar Narragansett bay landmarks such as
Prudence Island, the Newport Bridge, and the Castle Hill and
Point Judith Lighthouses made it hard to resist. The book
includes a fun map for kids of the flight path of the gull,
from Bristol, all the way down to the southeastern tip of
Block Island.
It is clear that
for Colwell--a Bristol-native--the project was a labor of
love, paying homage to his home state and the community in
which he grew up. (He now resides in Arizona with his wife and
three children.)
The author gets
back to the East Bay once every year with his family.
When asked what he missed most about his life in Rhode Island,
Colwell naturally said, the bay! "I love the ocean and living
by the water.
