"Mother of Family Ideas"

As a great grandmother who has been out of the testing loop for quite a while, my own awareness of the high-stakes standardized testing monster is fairly recent and I was quite appalled to learn that 60% of students taking these tests nationally are failing them. My major concern is about what is happening to our children's self-esteem and confidence.

While I'm not in a position to change  the politics, I'm certain there are things I CAN do to help parents provide students and children of all ages, with many opportunities to imagine, envision and create outside of the classroom, and to maintain a positive sense of confidence in their abilities. Feeling like a failure can too easily become a self-fulfilling prophecy. A better idea is to replace fear with the confirmation that they CAN do more than learn to test.  A child can also succeed by having useful knowledge and a wide variety of interests too.

My purpose in producing this book is to encourage children to try many things, and in the process, discover what they love to do, find areas where they excel, and learn beneficial skills, techniques, and information too. Most of all, I want them to know they are capable, and able to experience situations where they can feel confident about their abilities and things they have learned first-hand. Suggested activities are ones that will teach and encourage children in many ways, whether high-stakes testing is a part of their lives or not.
